Rusape motorist charged US$700 for reckless driving.
A 49-year-old man, Julius Katuruza, has been fined US$700 by the Rusape Magistrate's Court for
culpable homicide after his vehicle struck and killed a 12-year-old girl, Beyonce Chibhadhura, on June 1, 2025.
Katuruza, of Plot 33 Tikwiri Farm, Rusape, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced by Magistrate Tendai Mahwe. In addition to the fine, Katuruza faces eight months in prison if he fails to pay.
A further eight-month prison sentence was suspended for five years, pending no repeat of similar offenses.
Prosecutor Faith Mutukwa presented evidence that Katuruza was driving a Nissan NP300 (ACC 7759) with two passengers along the Rusape-Tsanzaguru road when he struck Chibhadhura, who was crossing the road.
The victim sustained fatal injuries and died upon arrival at Rusape General Hospital.
The court heard Katuruza was negligent, traveling at excessive speed and failing to exercise proper caution.
The vehicle sustained minor damage to the left fender and headlamp.
A Vehicle Inspectorate Department report is available for further proceedings.
The incident has sparked concerns about road safety in the area.
